The Montessori method
First and foremost the Montessori approach allows the child to develop in a natural way. In order to provide the optimum conditions for this natural development, Dr. Maria Montessori developed a system of education, by observing the child and identifying what she called ‘universal characteristics’ of childhood.
The Montessori classroom provides the kind of environment that is most appropriate to meet the child’s needs and with this, Dr. Montessori presented the best way for the teacher to guide and nurture the child in a school setting.
The interaction between the three essential ingredients – the prepared environment, the universal characteristics and the Montessori trained teacher – influences and shapes the child’s development, so that natural growth takes place and each child’s unique personality emerges.
The child is given the best possible conditions to promote physical, social, emotional and intellectual development – the aim being to enable the child to achieve his/her full potential and a love of learning.
